Whitsun (JYMQD002) is the second release in Gavin Marwick’s Quarterdays series of EPs being released in 2023. Here Gav (fiddle player with, over the years, Iron Horse, Bellevue Rendezvous and Firelight Trio amongst others) is joined by the wonderful Galloway harpist Wendy Stewart. They currently play together in the Galloway Agreement (Galloway’s alternative/folk string quintet) and have recently been doing shows with The Village and The Road.
These EPs are collections of new contemporary tunes composed in a traditional style by Gavin. This second EP is a voyage of discovery into the lore and history of Whitsun. It’s a celebration of May and the beginning of the summer - the beasts are now all out in the fields, the primroses are still out - and in religious/spiritual terms it is mixed in with Pentecost and Beltane, holy wells and weddings. There are are balmy warm days yet still the chance of bitter cold.
The atmosphere of the EP is very gentle, laid back and melodious. A chance to relax after the harsher months before and in anticipation of a languorous summer. Soft reels, jigs, strathspeys and airs combine Gavin’s rich fiddle and Wendy’s beautiful harp playing. The instruments have plenty of space to sing out, soothe the mind and calm the soul. Recorded live at Gran’s House Studio by Angus Lyon. More info will be online at
gavinmarwick.co.uk.
The Quarterdays series, which started with Candlemas (JYMQD001), will continue in August with Lammas, recorded with Ruth Morris, and finally Martinmas in November.
