Februus was the Etruscan god of the underworld and of purification. Candlemas being the exact midpoint of winter then, according to the old saying, "A farmer should, on Candlemas day, have half his corn, and half his hay." Bride, whose saint's day is February 1st, is intertwined with Candlemas and the spring awakenings at this cusp of the season. She would use a birch wand to bring the earth back to life, growth and warmth.
